  • Initial accreditation for optoms new to the area: email Roshana (roshana.malik3@nhs.net) who will organise a face-to-face session for this
  • CPD: we were not able to obtain a CPD point for the glaucoma talk. I will send an email separately to attendees with details of the talk so that you can apply for self-directed points if you wish

Referrals

Please use the Electronic Referral System, EERS or if out of area please send via GP or try  meh-tr.bedfordsatellite@nhs.net

Emergency referrals:

  • If a patient might need to be seen the same or next day (chemical burn, laceration, orbital cellulitis, corneal ulcer, retinal detachment etc) then you need to email this referral to moorfields.bedfordacutereferrals@nhs.net.
  • You do NOT need to submit these emergency ones via EyeV as well

Urgent referrals:

  • If a patient does not need to be seen that same day or the next day (BRVO, wet AMD etc) then please continue to submit these via EyeV as usual and we will receive them within 24hrs of submission

Soon referrals:

  • Although this remains an option on the EyeV drop down list (because it is used by other hospitals), we do not have a "soon" option on our end. So if they do not require routine review, please put it through as urgent (i.e. do not use the "soon" option for referrals to Bedford)

Routine referrals:

  • EyeV advise that referrals have been rejected because patient demographic details contained within the referral did not successfully match the patient demographic service record. Please ensure the name, DOB and address on the referral exactly matches that on the NHS record (i.e. regardless of whether the patient uses their middle name or an abbreviation of their name, the referral must state the details as per their NHS Spine record).
  • If a patient receives a letter asking them to book an appointment, they need to call that number to try and book the appointment. If they do not make this phone call / go online, then we will not receive the referral, regardless of whether they were successful in booking an appointment or not

For Optometrists, eye care professionals and Medical professionals only we have an optometry advice line.

If you (the referrer) needs to speak to a triager (not for emergencies - these need to be sent as detailed below), you can either call the office on a Weds/Thurs between 0900-1700 (on 01234 795 789), or email miriam.verdu@nhs.net on a Mon/Tues/Fri (and she will call you back). Note that this is for community optoms only - not for patients
